Occurrence remarks [Note from Doris Sinkora:] Text on the pinned-on German note: "Ich wuensche recht sehr zu erfahren | ob der Zettel zu: Conferve marina geniculata etc. Raj. Syn. 2.61. und der zu | Fontinalis Linné's Autographa | sind. Ich habe guten Grund dieses zu vermuten. Den Zettel zu Fontinalis erbitte ich mir jedenfalls zurueck." Translation: I should very much like to find out if the note with: Conferve marina geniculata etc. Raj.Syn. 2.61. and the one with Fontinalis are Linne's autographs. I have good reason to suspect this. I definitely ask to have the note with Fontinalis returned to me. Specimen sheet bottom left: "Conferva marina, geniculata, ramosissima, lubrica, longis sparsisve ramulis. R.S.3.61." Specimen bottom right: "Conferva marina nodosa lubrica ramosissima et elegantissima rubens. Raj. Syn. 3.62 25. ex Insula Marly." A third specimen sheet without writing was found together with the two Ray sheets inside the grey folded sheet. Found filed in the main collection of Ex-Australian Algae under Ceramium penicillatum Areschoug. John Ray (1t. Rajus) 1628 - 1705.¶Further particulars on the two specimens can be checked in Ray Synopsis Vol. I p.61 Nr. 23 and p. 62 Nr. 25 (in our library). First published in 1690, so the specimens must have been collected before that date. [Written at a later date in pen:] P.S. Ed. 3!! publ. posthumously by Dillenius in 1724. - D.S. 30. viii. 1979. [Cont.:] The pinned-on note would suggest that the specimens were at some time in the Linnean Herbarium. They probably came to us through the Sonder Herbarium. I found a pre-Linnean sheet of Fontinalis squamosa L. in the main collection of Ex-Australian mosses, which may be the specimen of Fontinalis referred to in the above note. Doris Sinkora - 5.11.1974. [Original specimen sheet has a partial watermark featuring letters: "GN". Collection date (prior to 1690) inferred from Sinkora note].
