Field notes Usually 3 carpels only maturing, sometimes 1 or 2, rarely 4; carpels straight on some racemes, twisted on others, the variation quite noticeable. Plants erect, emergent; leaf blades semi-circular in transverse section above the sheath, spongy, tapering to flat and acute over outer third, sheaths broad, overlapping.
