Field notes | Herb to 90 cm high. Plants appear to be rhizomatous, rhizomes pink. Leaves decussate, mid green above, paler below, glands well spaced, petiole absent, base of leaf wrapped around stem. Inflorescences in upper leaf axils and terminal, shorter than adjacent leaves. Flowers 3–5 at the end of peduncles. Sepals 5, green with pink longitudinal veins. Petals 5, pink with longitudinal colorless veins. Stamens in 3 groups; each group consisting of 3 pink filaments joined at the base and for about half their length and separate above; anthers 9 in total, yellow and dark pink. Between each joined group of filaments is a low orange structure that is attractive to ants. Stigma with 3 small white lobes; style green; ovary appears to be in 3 joined sections that are pink with long green stripes. Plants with dried remains of heads present on 28 June 2006 – above ground parts appear to be dead at this time (collection J.R.Hosking 2712, L.C.Colyer & E.Lanting). |

Occurrence remarks | Locally common (100s of plants over about 50 m x 5 m, not noted elsewhere). No flowers open at the time of collection (12.15 pm eastern summer time (EST)). Flowers open at 5 pm EST the next day, also observed opening at 3:30 pm EST on another day. |
