Organism remarks | Characterised by 1. dark brown tough fruitbody with tomentose or villose pileus, 2. dark corrugated lamellae, 3. tough dark villose stipe attached to a ball of sclerotial hyphae and soil. Pileus: 15-80 mm diam.; convex sometimes with a slightly upturned margin, with a slightly raised or depressed umbo; surface dry, covered with small dark strigose scales, becoming almost tomentose at the margin or over the disk in some specimen; dark chocolate to cinnamon brown (6F8, 7E8, 8E8); context pale whitish, darker near the cuticle, very tough, leathery, fibrous. Lamellae: adnate; close; corrugated-folded; occasionally forked or daedalea-like (wavy or maze like); even tooth-like when eroded; tough and leathery; greyish-white (7B1) with brown margin (7E8), margin heavily eroded, lacerate. Stipe: 20-50 x 5-10 mm; cylindrical; tough (almost woody); slightly flared at apex; stuffed; context white, fibrous - leathery (as pileus); surface dark brown; concolourous with pileus (7F5-8); densely velutinous, attached at base to a ball (20-70 mm) of brownish sclerotial hyphae mixed with soil. Stipe continues 30 mm or more into soil-hyphal mass!. Note see photograph of L.dactyloides in Fuhrer (1985) book page 52/53. Spore print: pale yellow cream (near 3A2) Macrochemical Tests: 15% KOH: pileus darkening, flesh negative. Mode of Life: saprophytic. Odour: none. Taste: inedible - no taste. |
