Occurrence remarks | Widely cultivated fodder crop. LUCERNE. One of the oldest forage plants; originally from the Mid. East - now world wide - (Known as Alfalfa in the USA). It is a very long lived, deep taprooted perennial grown in a wide range of soil and climatic conditions. Best development on deep alluvial soils and those of neutral or alkaline reaction, but successful also on many acid soils. An ideal hay plant, upt to 6 to 8 cuts p.a. under good conditions, down to about 14" rainfall (depending on seasonal distribution), valuable as pasture with occasional cut of hay. Disappears from grazed pastures unless adequately spelled between grazings. Lucerne flea and red-legged earth mite cause considerable damage, especially of seedlings in some parts of southern Australia. 120. |
