Field notes Semi-erect perennial shrub, divaricately branched, to 60 cm high. Cladodes very succulent, green with reddish purple patches. Cladodes to 30 cm long. The plants produce a great deal of fruit, which is reddish purple. Fruit does not seem to produce viable seeds.
Occurrence remarks This species forms impenetrable thickets and there are thousands of plants scattered along the river. It propagates very readily from detached cladodes and fruit. species.

Supplied as "Primarily infesting the basalt escarpments above the river, but a few plants growing at edge of river. Ass. spp. include Hymenanthera dentata, Bursaria spinosa var. microphylla, Acacia mearnsii, Clematis microphylla, Einadia nutans, Bothriochloa macra, Rumex brownii, Stellaria pungens, and several other native and introduced species."
