Occurrence remarks Grass to 1.2 m high. Culms to 1.2 m long. Back of lemma densely hairy. Palea from callus to top of broadened part of lemma lobes. Awn spirally twisted. Styles purple-pink and feathery. Anther filaments white, stamens scarlet and 2-3 mm long. Ligule and top of sheath ciliate. Nodes 2-3 per culm and hairless. Leaves inrolled and with small antrose hardened areas. Formerly Chionochloa pallida (R.Br.) S.W.L.Jacobs.
