Organism remarks | Characteristic Features: (i) bright yellow gills that bruise blue: (ii) smooth dull fawn cap with thick in-rolled margin that becomes undulated with age; (iii) flesh bruises blue but turns reddish after a few mintes; (iv) stem variable in shape, pale yellow near apex; (iv) robust, solid fruit bodies. Pileus: up to 180 mm diam.; at first flat convex with thick tightly inrolled margin; soon flattened with thick, non-grooved margin often becoming irregularly undulating; surface smooth to the eye, minutely matted-felty (under lens), pale fawn (near 4C5-5C5) uniformly so dulling with age, bruising dull red-brown rapidly, thin pellis, sand not sticking or embedded in surface; margin eventually markedly undulating. Lamellae: adnate to subdecurrent, not anastomosing at apex; crowded then closely spaced to 12 mm deep (quite deep), not thick and waxy in width but quite thin and flexible; edge smooth and entire; pale straw yellow when very young, becoming much brighter golden yellow with slight greenish tinge (near 3A6-3B6); bruising blue rapidly later turning dull kahki brown (not black) after much time; lamellules abundant in a least two tiers. Stipe: up to 100 x 40 mm; solid; very variable in shape; sometimes cylindric and short (about half cap diam.), or clavate or ventricose with or without tapering base, but not radicating. Base never swollen; often with adhering clod of sand; basicel mycelium not conspicuous, white. Surface smooth to the eye, minutely scurvy near apex, dry; pale yellow near apex, dirtly below and sand-covered. Flesh: whitish instantly bluing, rather mottled; colouration becomes dull red after about 5 minutes. The red colour seems to dull to pinkish after further time but remains mottled and does not engulf the whole flesh. Flesh thick over stipe apex, up to 40 mm thick. Stem bruises eventually dark brown. Taste: mild. Odour: not distinctive. Spore print: olive brown, between 4D5 and 5D5. Life mode: M. |
