Occurrence remarks Cactus to 11 m high. Older cladodes blue-green to grey-green and with 6-8 longitudinal ridges. Juvenile plants to 30 cm high with 4-6 longitudinal ridges. Up to 8 spines per areole, spines sometimes lost with age. Trunks on largest plants to 21 cm wide with grey spines to 11 cm long. Fruit and finished flowers on some older cladodes of tall plants. Identity confirmed by Roberto Kiesling (SI) on 25 February 2004 and only confirmed to genus by Beat Leuenberger (B) on 19 February 2004. (= C. hildmannianus K. Schum. var. uruguayensis (C.Ritter ex R.Kiesling) N.P.Taylor)

Supplied as "Eucalyptus populnea F.Muell. subsp. bimbil L.A.S.Johnson and K.D.Hill and Callitris sp. woodland growing with other cacti including Harrisia tortuosa (J.Forbes ex Otto and A.Dietr.) Britton and Rose (J.R.Hosking 2401 and W.A.Cherry), Cylindropuntia rosea (DC.) Backeb. (J.R.Hosking 2395, W.A.Cherry and M.P.Goodwin) and Cylindropuntia kleiniae DC. (J.R.Hosking 2405 and W.A.Cherry) and mostly native herbs and shrubs. No rock seen. Red sand."
