Occurrence remarks | Notes Many 100s of 1000s (over many sq kms, estimated to be present over around 100 km2 in and around the Grawin, Lightning Ridge and Glen Garry opal fields) cactus to 1.5 m high and to 3 m wide. Cladodes grey-green, new cladodes darker green. Cladodes above trunk to 90 cm long and outer cladodes (ones with fruit and new cladodes) to 4 cm wide. Spines whitish straw-coloured, with detachable sheaths and in groups of 4-8. Petaloid perianth parts pink-purple, c. 3 cm long. Stigma pale yellow, style pink and c. 1.5 cm long. Stamens with golden anthers and filaments pink towards anthers and cream towards base. Fruit 20-45 mm long, older fruit with few spines, much less spiny than younger fruit. Fruit on older plants never in chains. No seeds visible in mature fruit. |
