Organism remarks The specimens could macroscopically be mistaken for a species of Lycoperdon by virtue of : (1) the punctate, otherwise smooth surface (2) pyriform shape (3) relatively thin and collapsing (when mature) peridium. Fruitbodies pyriform, or subglobose (usually width greater than height), stalk variable from a small point of attachment to a broad (up to 5mm) x 20mm long well developed stalk with a large rhizoidal white mycelial mass at the base. Caps solid at first but later soft and easily pushed inwards, up to 30mm broad x 25mm tall. Note habit of forming in caespitose clumps or at least pairs. Flesh of the peridium when young quite yellow soon dulling and reddening when cut. When mature cream, dulling quickly when cut with intense deep reddening (1E7) within 1 minute. Peridium thin at the top (about 1mm) broadening gradually towards the base where it may be 3mm thick near the base, surface dry tan brown (5B4 in cracks and 5C5 on the scales), i.e. scales darker than cracks. At first finely punctate (punctations barely raised though) then breaking up into small (<1mm) scales which are closely appressed. Colour unchanging with age. Gleba at first cream, becoming pigmented from centre outwards, soon purple 17F3 intermixed with paler veins, turning brown (7F3) before peridium begins to split, finally brown powdery 6E6 when finally exposed. Peridium maturation and spore exposure peridium splits very late on in the development. Then 4 or 5 radial splits occur but seems to remain urn-shaped and none have yet been seen to develop to stellate shape. Basidia 24u long x 10u wide at head, 4u wide at base, pyriform with swollen head, thin walled, hyaline, soon collapsing (well before spores are mature or even before they begin to obtain pigmentation). Sterigma 1u wide x 1u long i.e. broad, short hyaline, number of sterigma 3,4,6, no clamp connection at base, drawings made, NOTE Basidia collapse and remain hyaline, then the spores become surrounded by hyaline hyphae in a bundle (like Beaton's illustration of S. paradoxum) The spores have a short 2u x 2u apriculus 9which is essentially the sterigmata which is pulled away completely). Mode of Life: unknown.
