Organism remarks | Main features; (i) very pale glutinous pileus; (ii) arachnoid partial veil leavi not trace on the mature stipe. Odour: not distinctive. Spore print: hazel brown (near Methuen 6D6 - 6E6). NLB1685 matches Pholiota gummosa by virtue of: glutinous-viscid pileus obliterating any visible squamules; pale pileus, stipe and young lamellae; some brown colour developing in central old pilei; reddish-brown colour of the stipe base; greenish-yellow tinge at the stipe apex; fruit bodies tending to be fasciculate; cheilocystidia cylindrical flexuous leptocystidia; pleurocystidia fusoid-ventricose chrysocystidia; small ellipsoid-ovoid spores; hazel brown spore print (Methuen 6D6-6E6). Micro: Spores: in profile ellipsoid, in face view ovoid to oblong often broader at base than apex, not amygdaliform, slightly but distinctly thick-walled, smooth-walled, germ pore conspicuous, pale yellowish-brown without guttule in Melzers, brighter golden often with a guttlule in KOH, with small apiculus; 5.7-6.5 - 3.5-4.3 microns, mean 6.1 - 3.9 microns, Q: 1.44-1.68, Q mean 1.57 (n=25). Basidia: clavate sometime with distinct pedicel (e.g. 11 x 3 microns), 4-spored, clamped at base, 18-45 x 5.8-9 microns. Cheiloleptocystidia: abundant-crowded and greatly projecting forming a sterile gill edge, cylindric and often flexuous-sinuous, apex obtuse mostly slightly swollen (up to 7 microns wide), clamped at base, smooth/ thin-walled, hyaline, 35-55 x 3-5 microns. Cheilochrysocystidia: occasional, scattered singly, similar-shape to the cheiloleptocystidia, with refractive yellow contents. Pleurochrysocystidia: scattered singly and barely projecting beyond the hymenium, fusoid-ventricose sometimes with attenuated apex but not truly mucronate, with refractive contents as contracted inclusions mostly not or only faintly or partly yellowish, 25-50 x 5-9 microns. Also present on gill face are occasional chrysocystidioid clavate entirely bright yellow terminals not projecting beyond the basidia, 16-30 x 5-8 microns. No pleuroleptocystidia present on gill face. Hymenial trama: of smooth/thin-walled clamped hyaline hyphae, with some chryso-hyphae (bright yellow) and oleoiferous hyphae with refractive-glassy contents, not gelatinised. Pileipellis: epicutis an ixocutis with predominantly undissolved yellowish (in KOH) clamped hyphae 3-12 microns wide, with finely encrusted walls, subpellis not gelatinised. Clamp connections: abundant in all tissues. |
