Occurrence remarks Cactus to 1.3 m high. Trunk to 1.5 cm wide and covered with brown 'bark'. Older segments below new growth, grey-green and to 4 mm wide; newer segments green Old fruit red and often with segments growing out of them. No Dactylopius sp. (cochineal) on this species but lots of Dactylopius austrinus De Lotto on neighbouring Opuntia aurantiaca Lindl. plants. Locally common to locally dominant (alongside road and in adjacent pasture) for 1 km, over >5 ha, particularly dense over 90 m x 30 m).
