Occurrence remarks [Donated by Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences, 1979]. [Protologue cites “Hab. - Mullumbimby Creek, Tweed River, N.S.W. (W.B.)”. This citation alone (without further assessment of the protologue) includes W. Baeuerlen specimens from Mullumbimby Creek and possibly the Tweed River. There are several specimen sheets at herb. NSW that would probably be part of the type collection of Tecoma baileyana Maiden & R.T.Baker, including ‘Mullumbimby, Sep 1895, W. Baeuerlen 1633 (two sheets of same collection: NSW217230 & NSW377780) and ‘Mullumbimby, Nov 1895’ (NSW377774). G. Guymer has suggested (annotation on sheet) that the specimen(s) in sheet NSW377774 “may have been the exhibit at the Nov. meeting of the Linnean Society - hence Nov put on label and not Sept.”. Therefore, these Mullumbimby specimens may all be part of the same collection. There is also a collection by W. Baeuerlen from Tumbulgum (NSW377779) that is possibly a syntype, since Tumbulgum is located on the Tweed River. “Tweed River” is cited in the protologue and occurs north of the other cited geographic name, “Mullumbimby Creek” (a tributary of Brunswick River). The Tweed River citation may, however, be referring to a general broad region that includes the “Mullumbimby” specimens. Although Tweed River is included in the ‘habitat’, the notes in the protologue only refer to Mullumbimby Creek, e.g. “…. little hope of obtaining any [fruits] from the plants from which this diagnosis is made, as they are so situated on a vertical bank that all the fruit must inevitably fall into Mullumbimby Creek” and “Discovered on the banks of Mullumbimby Creek by W. Baeuerlen, and who, although collecting systematically in this district for over four years, has only seen one plant”. This account indicates that the Tumbulgum specimen could be discounted from being a type if the diagnosis is based on collections from a single plant from Mullumbimby Creek. Also, the Tumbulgum specimen is not dated to know whether it predates publication of the species. A case for lectotypification. P.G.K., Mar 2014].
