Occurrence remarks Large, 1st storey tree; gbh 9ft 10in; total height 100ft; buttresses rounded, short, but extending upwards as flanges; bole irregular. Bark: longitudinally cracked, reddish brown in colour, shed in large, irregular, thick flakes. A blaze revealed straw coloured sapwood and beany odour; periderm thin (easily rubbed off with a pencil butt); phellogen continuous, pale biscuit coloured to cream (darkening on exposure); phelloderm slightly darker in colour, c 0.25in thick, texture sub-woody. Leaves: pinnate, alternate; rachis 6-7in long, extending slightly beyond the last leaflet, covered, especially near the base, with whitish wax-like scales; leaflets alternate, 7 on each side, mostly covered with scales, pale green, ovate-lanceolate, apex acuminate, tip rounded, base very oblique, truncate on upper, cuneate on lower side, thin yet coriaceous; nerves 7-10 on each side of the midrib, but sometimes indistinct; petiolule 1/8in long; blade 2-3in long, 0.75-1in wide. Flowers: borne in panicles in the axils of the younger leaves; calyx very small, green, cup-like, 5-lobed; petals absent; stamens 5 (male flowers only). Wood: sapwood straw coloured, 2in wide. Truewood yellowish brown; pores small, moderately numerous (9-10 per sq.m), perdominantly solitary, yellow deposits common; rays narrower than the pores, ripple marks present on radial surfaces; soft tissue surrounding the pores and extending into short wings that are frequently confluent; frothing test positive. Leaves, flowers and wood collected.
