Field notes Herb to 1.8 m high, although mostly to 1.3 m high. Stems 4-sided. Upper leaves alternate, lower leaves opposite. Leaves bipinnate, upper surface dark green, lower surface much paler. Up to 3 ligulate ray florets with ligules to 6 mm long and 2 mm wide. Many heads with only disc florets that are tubular with 4 or 5 lobes at the apex. Cypselas at this stage dark green with 4 pale green awns at the apex. Awns with retrorse barbs.
