Field notes | Basidiomes gregarious, single or in clusters of 3-6. Rhizomorphs white. Stipe erect, 50-60 (-80) mm high, 5-7 mm across below cap, 7-10 mm across at midpoint, markedly bulbous at base, base 15-18 mm across, cylindrical in cross-section, solid. Most stipes curved or wavy, parelled sided. Stipe dry, not sticky or slimy when wet or dry, off-white, generally uniformly coloured on outer surface, slightly glossy. Outer surface of stipe stains somewhat yellow when cut. Outer surface of stipe appears finely longitudinally striate under magnification. Flesh off-white, staining yellow at base of stipe, with a chemical scent. Young caps: very young buttons are on a volva-like base, base is white, caps grey-brown. Double veil present. The inner (proximal) veil ridge is off-white, the outer (distal) veil is interrupted, broken up into cog-like segments. Veil 5-10 mm below stipe apex. Veil margins are also off-white. Upper and lower surface of veil concolorous. Young caps convex, off-white, suffused with grey-brown all over, more or less dull. Centre of cap flattened, no umbo or central depression. Mature caps: 35-52 mm across, broadly convex to almost applanate, usually with a shallow broad central depression, slightly undulate, scurfy, centre of cap with dark brown scurf, paler toward margin of cap. Scurf does not appear in concentric rings. Cap radially shallowly channelled. Caps dry, not slimy or sticky when wet or dry, not staining when cut. Cap flesh concolorous with stipe flesh. Gills moderately densely spaced. Gills flesh-coloured, turned to dark-cappuccino when left over night for spore print. Spore print dark brown on white paper, cinnamon brown on black paper. |
