|Occurrence remarks||Characteristic Features: (i) Fruit bodies with long narrow cylindric stalk and small globose or turbinate spore sac; (ii) Spore mass not bright ochre, but rather is deep reddish-brown; (iii) Colour pale dull brownish with shiny black blotches developing on the stalk of some specimens; (iv) Basal rhizomorphs thick, short; (iv) Can occur in abundance, often in small clusters of separate or co-joined fruit bodies. Odour: not distinctive. This is a typical collection of what we call 'Pisolithus microcarpus'. fruit bodies up to 15 cm tall x 4 cm wide (stalk) / 5 cm wide (head), with long narrow cylindric sterile base (stalk) and globose to turbinate spore sac. Ratio of size ca 4 or 5 (base stalk) : 1 (head). Flesh in stalk solid, tough, yellowing at first when cut, soon dulling and becoming dark brown to black near the surface of the stalk. Immature peridioles very small and there is a very narrow zone of them below the powdery mature spore mass. Mature spore mass deep brown (not bright orange-yellow ow or ochre) near Munsell 5YR 4/4 or 3/4 'reddish brown', near Methuen 7E8 'agate-henna'. Surface of stalk and immature head drab pale brownish (near Munsell 10YR 6/4 'light yellowish brown', near Methuen 6D5 'sunburn'), with areas of black shiny blotches developing on the stalk of some specimens. Base of stalk with drab, sand-covered coarse (up to 1 cm wide) tree root like rhizomorphs up to 3 cm long.|
